This relationship reinforces Curtiss-Wright’s commitment to innovation, quality, and operational excellence. The solution is designed to meet stringent performance and safety requirements while maintaining manufacturing efficiency.

As a trusted Tier 1 supplier to leading aerospace OEMs, Curtiss-Wright required multiple platforms to deliver precision dynamic load applications while prioritizing repeatability, scalability, and secure data handling. Averna’s expertise in high-performance automated test systems aligned with the specifications to meet these demands.

Curtiss-Wright today announced that it has completed the launch of its online electromechanical actuator catalog featuring 3D solid model and spec sheet downloads, powered by 3Dfindit. This tool provides engineers with 24/7 access to 3D CAD models and technical data, streamlining the actuator sizing and selection process.

This flexibility enables them to quickly integrate Curtiss-Wright electromechanical actuators such as the Exlar GTX100 into their designs, reducing manual work and minimizing risk.

Company to provide Compact, scalable Nano Motion Controller to work in collaboration with custom electro-mechanical actuation system used on the demonstrator aircraft

INTERNATIONAL PARIS AIR SHOW 2025, Le Bourget, Paris, France (Hall 3-D28) – June 12, 2025 – Curtiss-Wright Corporation today announced that it is supplying its innovative, extremely compact single-axis servo controller technology to Airbus UpNext in support of the eXtra performance WING demonstrator which is focused on reducing fuel consumption of future aircraft and contributing to aerospace decarbonization strategies. Curtiss-Wright’s Nano Motion Controller is designed for use in precision drive systems with size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints. The servo controller, developed by Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions Division’s facility in Neuhausen Switzerland, complements the Company’s custom electro-mechanical actuation system used on the demonstrator aircraft. This system will feature the complete package of equipment for enabling the semi-aeroelastic hinge function on the scaled demonstrator aircraft which integrates the eXtra performance WING on a Cessna Citation VII business jet platform.

The eXtra performance WING demonstrator, launched in September 2021, takes inspiration from nature to improve wing aerodynamics and performance that is intended to be compatible with any future aircraft configuration and propulsion system to reduce fuel consumption and, as a consequence, CO₂ emissions. 
 
The Curtiss-Wright technology will be integrated into the wing during summer 2025, ready for ground testing and subsequently flight testing in 2026. 

About the Nano Motion Controller 
The Nano Motion Controller is an exceptionally compact (5.4 x 5.3 x 3.8 in/138 x 135 x 97mm) and lightweight (<5 lbs/2 kg) unit that generates up to 120A of peak current with 28V input power to deliver more than 3kW of power.  For the eXtra performance WING demonstrator, the Nano Motion Controller was equipped with an additional internal DC/DC converter to increase the motor voltage from 28V to 50V and was qualified to meet the DO-160 (Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment) standard. 

Curtiss-Wright designs and manufactures its electric actuation products at its Shelby, N.C., Stratford, Ontario, and Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland facilities.

SHELBY, NC­­ – November 1, 2024 – Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division today announced the expansion of its popular Exlar® electric actuator product offerings to include hygienic actuators with FDA-approved materials and finishes. Designed for automation systems in the food & beverage, packaging, and pharmaceutical industries, the GTF helps customers to achieve hygienic certifications such as USDA, 3-A, BISSC, and EHEDG more economically than currently available products in the market.

shelby, NC – January 3, 2024 – Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division today announced that its new Exlar Tritex EVA electric valve actuator has achieved CSA Class 1, Division 2 (C1D2) Hazardous Location certification. It also outperformed American Oil & Gas producers’ expectations for rugged field test operations in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. The Tritex EVA answers the demand for an efficient, high-speed solution while meeting the Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP) and Quad-O zero-emissions regulations in the Oil & Gas Industry.

“Based on nearly 30 years of experience in Oil & Gas valve actuation, our Tritex EVA is well positioned to meet the needs of the growing market,” said Phil Bowker, VP/Senior General Manager at Curtiss-Wright Actuation Division. “With this innovation, producers can meet today’s strict regulations without compromising speed or performance when switching from pneumatic to electric.”

The Tritex EVA is environmentally friendly and efficient with a powerful, compact system integrating a servo drive, motor, and roller screw actuator to achieve extreme life, speed, and accuracy. Combining the simplified actuation system with Modbus RTU communications enables producers to have remote operation and monitoring - all with less components when compared with pneumatic systems.

The electric Tritex EVA has been under field test throughout 2023. The field trial units remain successfully in service, proving the ruggedness of this new technology.

Curtiss-Wright is Plugged-in to the Electrification Revolution

For Aerospace & Defense Platforms with Stabilization, Actuation and Sensor Solutions

Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE:CW) today announced that it is ideally aligned to help drive the transition to electrical power currently underway across the Aerospace & Defense industry with new solutions and technologies from its Defense Solutions, Actuation, and Sensors divisions. Growing demand for solutions that deliver reduced size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) and enable zero emission initiatives, combined with the emergence of new applications – such as autonomous vehicles, swarming and loyal wingman drone fleets, and underwater unmanned vehicles (UUV) – is helping to accelerate the move away from fossil fuels and legacy hydro-mechanical system designs.

Curtiss-Wright is participating in the move to electrification across a broad range of air, land, and sea platforms and currently supplies a number of core technologies and services that span both the Aerospace and Industrial markets and are also transferable to Defense applications.

Drive Technology and Motion Control
Reflecting the turret drive stabilization market’s steady move toward electromechanical operation in recent years, at DSEI 2023 Curtiss-Wright will showcase its next-generation High-Voltage Turret Drive Stabilization System (HV TDSS). The HV TDDS converts 28V battery power up to 750V peak power for precision maneuvering of high-inertia loads on such platforms as large caliber turrets and main battle tank turret drive and stabilization systems. The innovative system provides short-burst  high power without adding SWaP-C or the risk of damage to sensitive electronics. It’s ideal for applications such as high-speed motion control systems, mobile air defense, high-speed launchers for active protection systems, and mobile radar stations, cranes, trucks, and excavators. The HV TDDS is also well suited for use in naval weapon system applications on a wide variety of platforms, including warships.

The Benefits of Electro-Mechanical Actuation (EMA) Technology
Electro-mechanical actuation (EMA) technology delivers proven and compelling benefits and advantages, such as superior reliability and improved energy efficiency, over traditional hydraulic approaches for a wide range of aviation applications. Compared to hydraulic actuation, EMA delivers significant improvements for SWaP, with lighter and smaller alternatives that result in significant weight savings at the system level. In October 2017, Curtiss-Wright was first-to-market with a distributed rotary electromechanical spoiler and flap actuation system developed for Part 23 aircraft.

Curtiss-Wright is committed to being an industry leader in bringing the revolutionary advantages of electric actuation to flight, from fixed wing to rotorcraft, from general business jets to military platforms. Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division is a leading supplier of EMA systems for a wide range of defense aviation applications, including flight controls, engine controls, and landing gear. Of note, the division supports Eviation’s all-electric aircraft, the Alice, with a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) lightweight, plug-and-play primary flight control actuation EMA solution that reduces cost, schedule risk, and program risk. In addition, Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions Division provides Eviation with its IADS flight test software for real-time and post-flight data visualization, analysis, and reporting.

In February 2023, Curtiss-Wright announced that it had been selected by Dynetics, a Leidos company, to provide EMA actuation technology to support the new Enduring Shield platform to meet the U.S. Army’s cruise missile defense needs. Under the contract, Curtiss-Wright is providing EMA elevation and stabilization actuators for the mobile ground-based weapon system, which is designed to acquire, track, engage and defeat cruise missiles, rockets and unmanned aircraft system threats.

The Electric Path to Decarbonization of Military Flight
As requirements for electric solutions for military aviation are rapidly growing, Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division develops technology that contributes to the survivability of defense aircraft while improving their reliability. We are also seeing expanding use of uncrewed aircraft in the defense sector, a type of platform for which electric systems are highly relevant. In support of commercial aircraft and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) markets, the division’s highly integrated electromechanical actuators are helping to increase flight efficiency and support decarbonization efforts. For example, to power the new generation of zero-emission/electric aircraft, Curtiss-Wright’s distributed flight control systems are being used where conventional hydraulic architectures are no longer an option.

The Actuation Division’s Exlar business is an industry-leading supplier of electrically powered stabilization and elevation solutions for demanding applications. Examples of military applications supported by Exlar include EMA to replace hydraulic and pneumatic technologies on missile defense systems, end-of-arm components for bomb disposal robots, lift actuation for high power microwave weapons and jet blast deflectors onboard naval platforms such as aircraft carriers.

Next Generation Airframes and Electrification
In 2022, Curtiss-Wright's Actuation Division announced that it was selected by Airbus UpNext to provide custom EMA technology for use on the eXtra performance WING demonstrator project which is focused on decarbonization and improved efficiency for next-generation aircraft. The project, which will explore active control technologies to improve wing performance, includes an intelligent wing tip, known as a semi-aeroeslastic hinge, which holds great potential for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Curtiss-Wright is providing Airbus UpNext with an actuation system for control of the semi-aeroelastic hinge on a scaled demonstrator aircraft. The demonstrator integrates the eXtra performance WING on a Cessna Citation VII business jet. The semi-aeroelastic hinge technology enables a more efficient wing design that improves aircraft fuel burn and reduces environmental impact. The demonstrator will improve and optimize wing aerodynamics and performance for future commercial aircraft, regardless of propulsion solution and aircraft configuration. Curtiss-Wright derived its design from electric actuator technology it developed for a recent business jet program as well as heritage concepts reaching as far back as the hinged-wing North American XB-70 supersonic bomber project of the 1960s.

In another example of how EMA is bringing innovative solutions to aviation, Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division, also in 2022, was selected by Airbus to provide rotary and linear actuators, alongside control and power electronics, to open, close, latch and lock the new A350F freighter aircraft’s Main Deck Cargo Door. Curtiss-Wright’s EMA design also includes a high-voltage DC architecture that minimizes weight, offers improved reliability over legacy systems, and incorporates health monitoring functions.

Sensors: Moving from Wire-Wrapped to Solid-State
Curtiss-Wright’s Sensors Division produces high-accuracy linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) and other position sensors, solenoids and valves that enable precise control of fuel metering and air management systems in aircraft gas turbine engines and contribute to reduced fuel burn. The division also supplies linear and rotary electro-mechanical actuators with integrated gearing/clutches/brakes/position sensing and actuation control electronics. The division’s ultra-high temperature sensing and control solutions are supporting the next generation of aircraft engine development programs with control solutions located close to the engine core to deliver even greater levels of fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Their solid-state sensor products provide electronics-based sensing technologies that deliver reduced size, mass and cost versus conventional inductive solutions, and support the growing need for lighter and ‘smarter’ sensors in markets such as AAM. In one recent example, the Sensors Division was selected to provide a new tailplane indication system for the upgrade of a leading training aircraft platform. The solution features contactless rotary hall effect sensors and microprocessor driven indicators that increase system service life from 400 flight hours to more than 80,000 flight hours. These rugged long-life programmable DC-output based contactless sensor solutions eliminate the need for modifications to the aircraft’s electronics, greatly reduce service intervals, and significantly increase the life of the tailplane indication system. The new electronic sensor design replaces legacy wire-wound sensors. This new generation of contactless sensors is smaller and lighter and has no moving parts, all of which makes them ideal for use in next generation Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) platforms.

DAVIDSON, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that it has been awarded a contract to support the new Enduring Shield platform from Dynetics, a Leidos company, to meet the U.S. Army’s cruise missile defense needs. Under the contract, Curtiss-Wright will design and build electromechanical actuators for the first 16 Dynetics launcher platforms, with an option for 400 additional launchers with associated interceptors.

The U.S. Army Program Executive Office Missiles and Space awarded Dynetics the contract for the Indirect Fires Protection Capability (IFPC) program to produce its mobile ground-based weapon system. The system is designed to acquire, track, engage and defeat cruise missiles, rockets and unmanned aircraft system threats.

The actuators, produced at Curtiss-Wright’s Chanhassen, Minn. facility, incorporate the company’s Exlar® roller screw and motor technologies meeting rigorous environmental and performance criteria required by the U.S. Army. SHELBY, N.C. and ASHBURN, Va. – September 29, 2022  Curtiss-Wright’s Actuation Division congratulates Eviation Aircraft on the historic successful flight of Alice, the world’s first all-electric commuter aircraft. Curtiss-Wright is proud to support this nine-passenger, two-crew member aircraft with its high-power density electromechanical actuation (EMA) technology. Curtiss-Wright’s proven commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) EMA design delivers a lightweight, plug-and-play primary flight control actuation solution that helps reduce cost, schedule risk, and program risk. In addition, Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division provides Eviation with its IADS flight test software for real-time and post-flight data visualization, analysis, and reporting.

The all-electric Alice aircraft features:
● Max operating speed: 260 knots
● Max useful load: 2,500 lbs for passenger version and 2,600 lbs for eCargo version
Alice is available in three variants including a nine-passenger commuter, an elegant and sophisticated six-passenger executive cabin, and an eCargo version. All configurations support two crew members. The executive cabin and eCargo variations are identical to the commuter configuration, except for the interior.

Alice is powered by two magni650 electric propulsion units from magniX, the only flight-proven electric propulsion systems at this scale. Other key suppliers include AVL (battery support), GKN (wings), Honeywell (advanced fly-by-wire system, flight controls and avionics), Multiplast (fuselage), Parker Aerospace (six technology systems), and Potez (doors).

FTX Series is Now Available with 1200 mm Stroke Lengths

Exlar, a business unit of Curtiss-Wright, announced that its FTX Series high force electric actuators are now available in stroke lengths up to 1200 mm (48-inch). Building on the proven performance of power and precision of the FTX family, this longer stroke option provides machine builders with even more flexibility and versatility.

Designers incorporating FTX Series actuators are already seeing improved efficiency and throughput, especially in extrusion, forming, and pressing applications where an expanded range of motion is necessary. With force ratings up to 178 kN, these environmentally clean and safe actuators are a great alternative to fluid power with higher accuracy, better repeatability, and less maintenance.
